THE ROLE OF BUDGETING IN PUBLIC SECTOR MANAGEMENT
The objectives of this research are to: (1) analyze the role of budgeting in public sector management, (2) identify the benefits of effective budgeting for public sector operations, and (3) evaluate the challenges associated with public sector budgeting. A survey design was chosen to gather data from public administrators and financial managers. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 378 participants from public sector organizations in Lagos was determined, ensuring comprehensive insights. The public sector was chosen for its unique financial management processes and potential for budgeting impact. The reliability coefficient score of the survey was 0.87. Findings indicate that effective budgeting is crucial in public sector management, aiding in resource allocation, financial accountability, and service delivery. Recommendations include adopting rigorous budgeting practices, providing training on effective public sector budgeting techniques, and continuously monitoring and adjusting budgets to ensure alignment with public sector goals and regulations.
